Everyone loves a quick outcome. It doesn’t require extra effort, patience, effort, or correction.
This is what makes automation and artificial intelligence so appealing. People are “guaranteed” a result with minimal investment.
Minimal effort creates minimal attachment due to the lack of investment. This is why people easily abandon services and trash products. There’s no skin in the game and no incentive to make it better.
With automation everything becomes the same. There might be less errors, but there is also less excellence. Mediocrity becomes the norm.
We see this in the mass production of goods. Poor fabric quality and products that break within year. When finances are tight and the exchange of value isn’t there it becomes discouraging to not only the individual, but society.
We see this in the automation of services. There’s no connection to the business or customer and thus service declines. Look no further than delivery services, ride-share, service bots, etc.
Excellence requires effort from the creator and the client. It’s a collaborative effort of vision and constant feedback.
Every time I practice I find a new or better way to do something. The friction that occurs with repetition contributes to gradual improvement. This shows up in my work and my conversations with clients.
Automation removes friction at the cost of excellence.
