Planning Ahead for Hiring

Hiring has gone from local to global.

From hanging help wanted signs in windows to hanging social media squares.

From cultivating lists of talent to running applications through an algorithm.

The elimination of friction means everyone (bots included) can apply.

It’s made the process worse not better.

What hasn’t changed is the need for great help.

Talent has the greatest impact on business growth.

A great team member elevates your client relationships.

They bring out the best in their peers through accountability and encouragement.

They challenge the status quo and increase the value of your business.

WHAT IF…

What could happen if you planned for hiring with the same focus and intensity you gave revenue generation?

It’s normal to want to choose the route easiest to quantify and control, but what if the greatest rewards are in the investments and risks you take with people?

My favorite teams include ambitious, disciplined, optimistic, resourceful, and trustworthy peers.

We look forward to challenges, take initiative, own our roles, and do great work.

As a result, it’s no longer work, but fun building together.

CHALLENGE

Be clear about why you’re hiring and who.

1. Why are you hiring? List your needs.
2. What value does this role contribute to the business? Describe the financial and team impact.
3. Are you looking for someone to fill a seat or to help grow the business?
4. Who or what is your competition?
5. What would compel someone to join your team vs start their own?
6. What would make people excited to be in your office vs at home?
7. What’s the value exchange?
8. Do you want to be known for developing top talent in your industry?
